Sunday Aug 1 Lions Club Race

.........................

Hi FIRA car owners:
Bring those cars out and have some fun with them, if you are trying to sell your cars, what better way then show them off at the track.
Tim & I are having a good time with the Mini-Mods & Rascals, they are racers like you, looking to have fun.  You do not need to belong to any club, just come out and have fun.  So far we race as one group.  Our best show was at Jefferson, 10 cars, 6 mini-mods, 2 rascles, and 2 FIRA cars.   I got to run at Jefferson, what a great track.  next up is Slinger, want to go fast? come on out.
Vern Brown

NEWS

An unbelievable night at Columbus

11 cars in the pits and ready to race on Friday July 23. The weather was questionable but nobody could question the dedication this group of racers has and they were rewarded with a night of no rain  Friday is hard for many as some in the group drive a long way just to race. The great people at Columbus have always been great to work with and got everyone who was there before the end of qualifying out on track and timed in. Even the late arrivals were allowed on track after the timing system was removed just to shake the cars down. Columbus is a great track.

With a large group of cars we were able to run separate heats for each division.
As the 6 mini mods hit the track for their 8 lap heat, they lined up inverted by time.
John Demay led the group to the line with Barry Trusky outside
The racing was close, close enough that Ken Johnson had some minor contact and bent some sheet metal but that was not enough to keep him from moving to the front
In a surprise drive move the seat of the number 1 was filled with Justin Lindeman who also had his Rascal car in the pits
The 18 of Jason Bies and the 97 of Gerry Guiliano were in the thick of it all night.
In the end it was the 2nd of Ken Johnson taking the checkered flag
2nd        Johnson
5          Trusky
97         Guiliano
1          Lindeman
7          Demay
18         Bies
Up next was the 6 lap sprint for the Rascal cars. Tim Roach was to lead the field but in an incredible ballsy move he chose the outside lane and challenged everyone by giving them the fast low lane.. That sounds a lot better than I screwed up and forgot where I was supposed to start. When the green flew it was Roach to the lead for the first laps but soon an overheating issue would force him off.
Vern Brown, Kyle Lynn, Jason Dull and Josh Felder put on an incredible show for the fans with close exciting racing
Dull was impressive jumping into the Lindeman car with no seat time and finishing third. Jason is a former FIRA driver who has recently been racing midgets but as tonight showed, if it has wheels, he will drive the heck out of it.

The combined feature had each group inverted but still separated with the Rascal cars out front followed by the Mini Mods. The starts of this division are always exciting with the groups separating but with passing and close racing everywhere. Out front it Roach  on point but not for long. The Kid Kyle Lynn was on a mission and was soon to pass. The moisture in 3 and 4 was always in play and made for some excitement as the cars tried to avoid this area. As the 4, 38 and 17 raced hard lap traffic brought the group together again but the 4 was too fast tonight and would not relinquish the lead. As Brown and Roach dueled contact was made out of 4 as Roach got into the wet and started to come around. Brown had no where to go and the contact sent Roach to the pits with major damage and Brown was slowed with alignment issues.
The racing in the Mini Mods division was just as exciting with wheel to wheel racing all over. My results show the 97 of Guiliano leading the group at the checker but I apologize as I did not see it from the track. I am sure Gerry and 2nd put on the typical great lead and pleased the crowd

Special notes
Nobody works harder that Rob Pollock and Dennis Lynn in the pits helping out other crews and working with the line up.
The whole Mini Mod group works just as hard helping each out whether it be unloading or setting up the cars or even fine tuning the body work with a sledge hammer.

Thanks to all who raced
See you at the Sunday Aug 1 Lions Club Race

A hot and crazy night at the
Dells Raceway Park

Saturday was a great night to race but just getting there was difficult for three of the drivers.
Mark Findley and Tim Roach both suffered trailer tire failures just south of the Dells while the Ohio drivers Dale Aikman and Mick Guiher (YES!!!! they drove 9 hours to compete with some of Wisconsin's fastest cars) had injector issues. Everyone was safe and able to get to the track on time.
The Dells Raceway Park run a great program and Saturday was no exception. Two Looonnggg practice sessions allowed the drivers to make sure their rides were ready. The heat in the track was incredible and the track was slick but you would never know it by the qualifying times. Vern Brown led the field with an incredible 14.008 second lap, a tenth of a second quicker than the late models.
Time Trails
38    Vern Brown        14.008
4      Kyle Lynn           14.211
43    Mark Findley        14.361
17    Tim Roach            14.520
48    Josh Felder            15.533
88    Mike Guiher            16.270
3      Mike Findley            17.604
73    Dale Aikman              no time

With the threat of rain the program was going to move fast. A four car inversion had Roach on the pole for the 8 lap heat sprint, Rookie's, in status only, Mike Findley and Josh Felder fell in behind the fast four. The Ohio invaders rounded out the field as we went to the green. A couple of hot laps to scrub and heat tires (not really needed since it was 95 degrees out) and we were ready. The 17 of Roach strategically held back and as Findley eased up on the throttle, Roach was quick to hammer it hard and the white log was off to a quick start. The racing was tight and fast. Check out the race videos from the Dells and from the in car camera of Findley on the Video page of this site. You could throw an umbrella over the front four and they would have appreciated the shade but it was race time. Brown Lynn and Findley were wheel to wheel and fighting hard for every inch. Brown was able to work his way to the front and waged war with Roach for the lead. Side by side the racing was incredible. Brown drove deeper and deeper into the corner and took the lead from Roach but the racing was still on. With two laps remaining Brown under pressure from Roach went too deep and pushed up into the corner leaving the door open. Side by side racing was on again. The last lap had Roach and Brown side by side exiting 2 and coming up on lap traffic. THREEEEEEEE WIDE into 3 and it was Roach out front for the heat win.
Close racing was all over. Lynn and Findley fought hard for third and fourth with Findley ahead by inches The rookies of Mike Findley and Josh Felder ran great races as did Aikman and Guiher maintaining lines and getting faster every lap
heat finish is Roach, Brown, Findley Lynn, Felder, Findley, Aikman and Guiher

Up next in the feature showed how much the Ohio invaders want to race. Battery issues had the team stumped but ingenious thinking and hard work had them back on track. A tow vehicle battery and a driver switch in the cars had them on track again up front was an invert of the front four from the heat with Lynn and the older of the Findley brothers (a lot older) on the front row. A fast start and the race was on. Wheel to wheel action for the whole race. Brown was the class of the field moving from his third starting position to the lead and never looking back. Brown stretched the lead but the second third and fourth positions were nose to tail. Felder and the young gun Findley ran strong and fast. The smiles on their faces after the race showed just how much fun this racing is. Aikman had a shocking finish as the shade tree mechanic solution came up short with the battery shorting to the seat. More duct tape!!!!!!! Guiher was behind the wheel of the 88 mini spring and piloted the ride safely to the finish, first night out in the car and it was impressive.
Check out the video on this and you will see for yourself.
Feature finish was Brown, Mark Findley, Lynn, Roach, Mike Findley, Felder. Guiher and Aikman

SPECIAL NOTE
Even with a bounty on his head in the form of cold hard cash, Mark Findley silenced all the trash talkers as they hid at home afraid of a whooping. Mark was all action racing hard and finishing up front.

See you there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A new winner at Slinger!!!

Mother nature made it to the winners circle Saturday at Slinger Super Speedway beating out nine drivers who were ready to make a challenge. After drying the track twice the third thunderstorm rolled in and the track rolled over calling the race due to weather and the inability to get a full program in. In the shadows of the race haulers of Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, Ross Kenseth and Rich Bickle who were practicing for Nationals the next day, the Open Wheel Outlaws waited for their chance to turn laps as fast as the big names. The races may have beed cancelled but there was as much laughing and lying as ever. Bench racing and beer was still fun.

Hope to see everyone out on Saturday July 17 at the Dells

Delayed report from June 16
 Jefferson Speedway

My apologies for the delayed report but I can't find the driver's name of the 42 former Jim Thiel car and I wanted to make sure he was included.

Let me begin by saying those that did not make it to the race missed an opportunity to race on the world famous Jefferson Speedway, Wisconsin's Action Track. Having never been on the track before, I had a blast! The track is wide, smooth and fast. The 1/3 mile track has different banking and multiple grooves and was well prepared and run by the management of this great track. Now for the best part, a Wednesday night show and we had the best car count of the year.

The program was running fast and there was a lot of racing to take care of. Two long practice sessions allowed the racers to shake down the cars and get familiar with the track,

3 laps of time trials was exciting and Dr. 2th Ken Johnson led the mini mods on the time sheet even though it was his first night out, only about 1/2 second slower than fast time qualifier Vern Brown. I did not have time to get all the time trials as there was too much fun going on in the pits.
Here is what is great about this group, everyone was helping everyone, Competitors working to get their competitors faster.
Ken and Jerry Guilliano working to get the fuel pressure issue solved. Everyone working to get the throttle cable issue resolved on the Jason Bies car (yes you can spin out on the warm up lap if it sticks) Ken Johnson putting the Barry Trusky car on scales to set weight percentages and doing whatever we could for everyone else.

Now back to the results. A fast dash for the mini mods was exactly that. Jerry with his fuel pressure issue solved smoked the field to take the dash.

The heat and feature netted the same results with Vern Brown leading the outlaws and Jerry Guilliano up front of the Mini Mods but there was racing all over the track. The feature came to an exciting finish as the fast out law cars were just coming up to lap the Minis and were four wide at the stripe.

A great night of racing, if you missed it, you missed a great race
See everyone at Slinger.

Friday
June 11, 2010

History was made on Friday night at Columbus Speedway when the combined open wheel challenge of the Mini Mods, Rascal Outlaws and Formula Indy met for their second race at the track that Vern Brown calls home.

The weather called for rain all day but weathermen are like racecar drivers, they lie.

As the cars rolled out for practice Roach was left high and dry in the pits changing a kinked chain but luck would follow him all night. Just as they were about to roll on the track a sudden rain shower drenched the track and the drivers except Roach.

After a short drying period and the cancellation of practice (as expected) 3 lap time trails were a challenge. Cold tires and dust from the pits made for slower than normal times. Vern Brown paced the field at 13.433 seconds, a half second off his track record.
38    Vern Brown    13.433
4      Kyle Lynn      13.619
17    Tim Roach      13.725
1      Scott Hastings    15.003 (fast qualifier for Mini Mods)
7      John Demay        15.705
18    Jason Bies           16.292
21    Dennis Stitz          17.026

The Columbus track personnel did a great job to move the program along so that the show would be complete and the heat race was a sprint. Both groups lined up with a complete invert except for rookie Stitz starting tail. Roach led the field to the green but it was Kyle Lynn who won the drag race into one. As the field sorted out, Lynn was able to hold off a charging Vern Brown who ran out of laps to catch Kyle.
Scott Hastings continued his dominance in the Mini Mod division taking the checkered flag just ahead of John Demay.
Heat finish was Lynn, Brown, Roach, Hastings, Demay, Bies and Stitz.

The feature line up was invert again putting Roach back on pole and he was determined not to be beaten by the "kid" or the "old man". A slower pace to the green had Roach down a gear looking for the hole shot out of turn 4. As luck would have it, the green flew just as Brown's tires were rolling over the small wet area in the high groove of 4. It was an amazing shot of luck as Roach exploded out of 4 to take the lead which he would not relinquish. The choice of a lower gear had the car working hard and bumping the rev limiter 3/4 of the way down the straight. Giving up a bit of straightaway speed was more than made up by the car rocketing out of the corner. Roach held the low line and dared anyone to pass high. They tried but could not make it work. Not on this night.
Vern Brown was able to catch Lynn and claim second place. Kyle was determined to catch Roach and tried every line but opened the door for Brown late in the race.
Scott Hastings had the brake rotor red hot as he wheeled the Mini Mod around the slick Columbus low banks. Scott swept the night in the Mini Mod division taking fast time, the heat win and the feature. Great race Scott!!!!!
The feature finish was
17    Tim Roach
38    Vern Brown
4      Kyle Lynn
1      Scott Hastings
7      John Demay
18    Jason Bies
21    Dennis Stitz

Friday May 21, 2010

Opening day for the combined racing open wheel challenge featuring the Rascal Outlaws, FIRA and the Mini Mods at Columbus 151 speedway was a huge success. The night started off with hot lap practice sessions and unfortunately Justin Lindemann detonated the motor in his Mini Mod in spectacular fashion. A connecting rod failure knocked a baseball size hole in the case. Justin's night was not over though as he also had his Rascal Outlaw car and the team driver let Justin jump back into that ride.

Time trials were tricky as cold tires and a dusty track kept drivers from posting track record times but Vern Brown was at the front with a 13.429 lap to lead all racers. Scott Hastings led the Mini Mods with an impressive 14.821 lap.

Vern Brown            13.429
Kyle Lynn               13.600
Tim Roach               14.035
Justin Lindemann      14.808

Scott Hastings            14.821
Jason Bies                  15.078
John Demay                 15.608

The combined heat had the Rascal Outlaws and FIRA cars out front followed by the Mini Mods. Two races within one provided lots of action. On cold tires the drivers had to work the throttle to maintain control and work their way through the field. Kyle Lynn led the group followed by Vern Brown, Tim Roach and Justin Lindemann. The was close racing in the Mini Mods group with Jason Bies taking the win followed by Demay and Hastings.

The 15 lap feature was fast and furious. A gear change in the pits had the 17 car of Roach screaming out of the corner and hitting the rev limiter at the end of the straight. Engine temps were north of 230 degrees but the car was flying. Roach led the field for the first 10 laps and he was pulling away. Lap traffic proved that racing sometimes involves contact. After passing Demay in the front straight the dueling pair of Bies and Hastings were entering turn 1. Both cars took the low line and the 17 moved high to make the pass. The 18 of Bies pushed up hard perhaps hitting some moisture and the 17 dove low to make the pass but the 18 starting to spin came down and the right rear of the 17 contacted to front wing of the 18. The 17 suffered chain failure and was done as was the 18 with the damaged nose. Both drivers were OK.

On the restart it was Brown and Lynn in a hotly contested sprint to the finish. At the line it was Downtown Vern Brown outpacing Kyle "the KID" Lynn. Rounding out the field it was Hastings, Demay, Roach, Bies and Lindemann.

A great night of racing. Next up is Columbus again on June 11.
See you there

Tim
