Also on hand for the evening's festivities was the
Formula Indy Racing Association. Vern Brown continued his winning ways at
Columbus 151 with another victory in the 20 lap feature. John Zeilinga and James
Bass made up the front row on the start as Zeilinga grabbed the early lead. Lap
two saw Brown enter the top five as he began to pick off cars a lap at a time.
By lap eight, Brown had caught the leader Zeilinga, and after a one lap battle,
Brown took control. Brown drove away to the feature win followed by Tim Roach in
second and Zeilinga in third.
FIRA Report; Vern Brown clinched his fourth FIRA championship in
a row by sweeping at Columbus 151

Geneva Raceway Race Reports:
By Dale R. Erdmann

Excerpt:
It was a great night for racing in the family fun
night weekly action at Lake Geneva Raceway,Friday night went into the record
books, with close finishes and exciting racing.
63 year old Vern Brown of Waunakee showed that age did not make a difference.
Brown’s sweep came in the open wheel formula indy race cars, as he took fast
time, won the heat on the last turn and ran tough in the 15 lap feature that he
won.
John Zalinga ( Neal Gillentine driving ) looked
like a sure winner taking the lead at the off set of the formula indy
feature, leading the first seven laps. Vern Brown was running a distant was now
the leader, as Zalinga ( Neal Gillentine ) dropped
out (engine failure). The fast time qualifier held
on for the win, despite numerous challenges from Grant Greenfield, who had Kai
McNulty right there. Second generation driver Lyle Phillips was next and Gary
Cooper was sixth.
Vern Brown won the Formula Indy
feature,
then invited a lucky fan from
the stands to
join him in Victory Lane.

ROCKFORD SPEEDWAY JUNE 24, 2006
Rockford Speedway report
By: Kevin Ramsell.
Brown held off Neal Gillentine to win the 20-lap FIRA feature race.
Grant Greenfield grabbed the early lead and held on to it until lap 3 when
Gillentine took over the top spot. Brown
started fifth and challenged Gillentine for the lead on lap 8. Brown dove
to the inside of Gillentine for the lead going into turn one and didn’t give up
the spot.
The only caution came on lap 17 when Tim Roach hit the wall hard in turns one
and two. He was able to walk away. At the finish, Gillentine made
one last attempt but Brown was able to hold him off by half a car length at the
line.
FIRA Report; A great night of racing followed a rain delay Saturday night at Rockford. Nine cars made it for the show. The eight lap heat race was incident free and was won by Grant Greenfield, Vern Brown came in second with Neil Gillentine third.
Rookies Tim Roach and Kenny Marcellis lost their rookie ribbons before the racing began. Congratulation to Tim and Kenny!!!
The twenty lap feature race was won by Vern Brown followed by Neil Gillentine
driving John Zeilinga’s car, third place was taken by Grant Greenfield.

LAKE GENEVA, WISCONSIN MAY 5, 2006
FIRA report; The night started out cold but it got HOTTER!!!! Seven cars were on hand to race at Lake Geneva Friday night. Three of the seven cars were driven by rookie drivers Tim Roach (car #17), Kenny Marcellis (car #61) and Gary Cooper (car - #44). The other four cars were driven by veteran drivers Kai McNulty (car #14), Deron DeBoer (ca r #11), Vernon Brown (car #1 ), and Neal Gillentine (car #58 ) driving John Zeilinga’s car.
Kai McNulty (car #14) had a good first lap in the two lap qualification run, but the fourth turn marbles, barrels, and wall reached out and grabbed him. Luckily, Kai was not hurt. However, the “Kaiod Kar" suffered damage to the right side and Kai was unfortunately done for the night. The rest of qualifications went without any further incidents.
The heat race was seven laps of incident free racing fun!! However, the fourteen lap feature race was marred by an incident involving two front running cars.
Deron DeBoer (car #11) won the heat race with Vernon Brown (car #1 - 2nd
place) and Neal Gillentine (car #58 - 3rd place) close behind. The
feature race started out clean and all cars began to fall into a rhythm when the
mechanical gremlin latched onto Vernon Brown (car #1) and he lost his gearbox.
Deron DeBoer (car #11) and Vern tangled in the front straightaway and both cars
were sidelined for the rest of the race. Neal Gillentine (car #58) showed his
professional level driving skills and ability to win races while helping the
rookie drivers reach a new level of competition. Neal had the race easily won,
but slowed and showed rookie drivers Tim Roach (car #17), Kenny Marcellis (car
#61), and Gary Cooper (car #44) the correct racing line, braking points, and
acceleration control. Neal’s efforts helped Tim, Kenny, and Gary drive faster
and really made the race GREAT FUN!!! Thanks Neal, you are GREAT!!! Of course
Neal, the natural born race driver, put the pedal to the metal in the last lap
and won the feature race handily.

Rookie and Practice Day Report &
Photos
A great success!
As usual, the day proved beneficial for all members who took advantage of this open practice at Rockford Speedway.
Those who attended thoroughly enjoyed the day. Slightly overcast, the temperature was perfect for the cars and drivers…easy on equipment.
Veterans tuned and the rookies got their feet wet. Hot laps were performed one car at a time and later, Neal, Deron and others played the rabbit to allow the newer drivers to find the groove. Just as expected, when out by themselves, rookies did well. When they chased a rabbit, a couple spun out…fun.
The 12 cars that attended were all well prepared and pristine…all went through the day with minimal mechanical woes indicating that the cars were in good tune. With the exception of two wall contacts, there were no problems. Older members offered advice and we asked Neal to put on an exhibition in Pres John’s car and he nearly got it into the 12 second range. The rooks all did fine lap times, some just missing the 14s. The season should prove enjoyable for all. Lets all come out and support our club…. We’re Racin!
PR announced that new FIRA sunglasses have been ordered and should be in soon and can be obtained at the track or mailed. Prices to come soon. Also, Frisbees are also coming. If you have a local car show, Email Pgroebe@aol.com and we will try to get some club participation.

The beginning…
The 2006 World of Wheels show
Yep, the 2006 World of Wheels program was a giant success. Your PR committee was concerned that the show audience wasn’t race oriented as the "racing" shows we have participated in the past. This concern was found to be ill founded the first night with many prospective racers asking the right questions about getting into FIRA. We had fans also. Many asked about the schedule for 2006. Many asked why we didn’t race more at certain tracks. No less than four were calling tracks to ask these questions as well.
We were located next to a hot rod legend, George Barris and his creations the Munster Coach and the original Batmobile. We also saw the General Lee and the cherry coupe used in American Graffiti. There were stock cars, modifies, a sprint car and several vintage road racers. FIRA member Dick Heath showed his recently restored Outhouse Sesco Chevy midget and won his class. He did spend all his time however, at our booth promoting FIRA.
While the show was a success, we still believe that we must continue put 110% into continued marketing to progress in racing and this show was just the beginning. We are looking into participating in karting expos and shows, local and regional car shows etc.
If you have any questions or would like pictures of our booth or any other attractions included in addition to those posted on the website, email and we can forward them to you. One interesting show truck was the fabulous HERO truck…another was Michele, our new friend spokesperson.
