SUBJECT: FIRA & World of wheels

This past weekend once again the World of wheels was held at Wisconsin Exposition center. This is the first year in a long time that FIRA had no car on display. Last year Denny Dutton displayed his car. I made several contact and found no one had interest in bringing their car. Now on the lighter side, I wore a FIRA  shirt and had many persons passing by asking about FIRA and was literature available. I furnished them the web site. The interest is still out there after many years of promotions. I would hope that some of the former members would get together and get involved in dialog that might bring back such a good racing organization.

FIRA and the Superlites meet at JRP Speedway in Tulsa, OK.  I brought the 57 Predator down to Tulsa on Saturday July 18, 2009.  We had a great time racing on the quarter mile oval.  Doug Bullington and his wife Kellie were gracious hosts.  We ran with the Thunderbolts, 40 hp NAMRA cars, pushing the young guns to drive harder.  We ran hard for the Superlite heat and feature until Doug was sidelined with an engine problem near  the end of the day.  Special thanks to Alf Gebhardt, track owner and promoter, for the extra practice time.  JRP is a great facility and I plan on a return trip next year.

The Superlites in Tulsa OK are still running.  We start April 4th.  We have branched off and made a kids class as well.  We call them the thunderbolts. (a namra car with a 40hp sled motor)Good interest is being shown down here.  Could be better, but with the economy the way it is, we'll take it.  Our website is www.superliteproseries.com  and we run at 12:00 noon on every other Saturday.  Call Doug Bullington (918)446-4161 if you have any questions.  We have been running your rules since we bought the cars from up there.  We would love to see some of you guys down here!

I attended the RORI banquet and was presented a plaque thanking FIRA for a great season. The banquet was very well attended with  every team represented, many crew, car owners, sponsors and new members were also present. Trophies and awards were handed out and then the bench racing began. A good time was had by all. RORI will be having their rules meeting very soon, they want to continue to race with FIRA and look forward to an exciting 2009 racing season

Just wanted to touch base with some old friends! Its Austin Konetski club member in 1995. That was one of the best years of my racing career. You guys let a young dumb kid come travel and race with ya and I remember every track and every show. I went on to race dirt modifieds and then Ashpalt super late models and was lucky to win in all of them. I learned there are great drivers at every track in every series out there!
I work for the #17 Sprint Cup team now and don't get home much but wouldnt trade it for anything. I often think about my time with you guy's, the fast cars and the great people. Glad to see the club is running strong! If anyone gets to a Cup race come find me! Good luck in 09.

I'd would like to thank everyone involved for your support and encouragement during my debut run at the Dells Speedway on August 23.
Obviously, it was disappointing to have a major mechanical malfunction; first, because it ended my racing night and second, a breakdown is time and money.  But that's racing!!
I was very appreciative and impressed with everyone's initial concern for me and then for all the advice about repairs.
Jim Bass did a great job making a new drive shaft and left rear upper radius rod for me.  He also helped me with a new chain and taught me about the shaft bearings.   John Zeilinga was generous with an offer of a spare secondary clutch and my son, Paul, was extremely helpful to me in getting the car back together and running.
Here's what we found out when we disassembled the damage (thought you might like to know so we all learn from each other's events):
First, as reported to me by more than one person, (including a few I found in the stands who witnessed the incident), the drive belt "shattered"; in doing so it seemed that one end was temporarily "stuck" on the secondary clutch. That produced a "whip-effect" as the remainder of the belt that then tore off of the secondary.
The torque and resultant force caused the drive shaft to bend (about 40 degrees and about 9 inches in from the end of the shaft where the secondary clutch was attached).  While doing so, the bent shaft caused the secondary clutch to whip around at the end of the shaft and slam on the chassis more than once with shrapnel pieces from the clutch going through the aluminum chassis floor.  All this force caused the drive chain to break.
We also found the left front motor mount and bolt were ripped off of the chassis; the left rear and right rear motor mount bolts were bent and broken ( a little extractor work was necessary) and the right front motor mount bolt was bent.   This force that pulled the motor to the front left also pulled a radiator hose off of the radiator.  That's where the water on the track came from and happened after the belt broke.  It had been speculated by a few drivers that the water hose came off and put water on the right rear tire which started the problem.  I found that the water hose had simply been bent downward to a 90 degree angle and was attached to an in take on a secondary radiator with a clamp; not a good connection.  I since have put a 90 degree fitting on that spot.
Well, that's my report and I'm disappointed that Milwaukee for 9-27 is cancelled.  So, I'll see you at the annual meeting and the banquet.
Please feel free to contact me via e-mail at any time.
Best wishes,         Denny Dutton   FIRA  #73

What a great day at the Milwaukee Mile Mini Road course.  Every FIRA member there assisted me with my car in some way and I thank you all.  John Z skipped a practice trying to get my car running.  Thanks John.  The camaraderie and friendly atmosphere is what drew me to joining this group.  Its nice to see its still strong.   People at the track, including a track employee, made positive comments about our cars and their performance on the track.  Thanks for all the kind words shared with my family in the pits. My wife really appreciated the guys stopping by to chat with her. My son Richard appreciated not being grilled with questions about his health, he's a quiet and reserved guy.  And he's not a race fan yet (I don't know how that happened) but he enjoyed watching the guys scrambling around their cars.
 Thanks,

Joining FIRA

I aim to get on the track with FIRA in 2008 and I want to take a moment and introduce myself. I have a ex NAMRA "aero" chassis and I am bringing it up to FIRA specs. Mark Morey has just completed my upgraded roll cage and now it's time to get going on reassembly.
Does anyone race a Rotax (or am I going to be the only European out on the track with all you rice rockets)? If anyone has experience with the Rotax 521cc, I'd love to connect up and gain any previous race experience. My current engine runs strong, however any information on clutches/gears run would be very helpful.
Also, where is everyone currently purchasing their Hoosiers and wheels?
Finally, as I get closer to the bodywork going back on... are the numbers #00 or #22 taken ay this time?
I look forward to getting know the FIRA family in 2008.

 Dear Mr. Saunders,

This inquiry is in response to rumors circulating that the Little Car Asphalt tires series starting with part   number 41 will or are being discontinued.

At the Formula Indy Racing association yearly rules meeting yesterday several members proposed that our series switch from the 10” diameter tires to 13” tires. The main reason form this proposed change was that they stated Hoosier is discontinuing the 10” tire production.

Can you confirm or deny this rumor?

Thank You for your assistance with this matter.

I want to say thank you for the opportunity to associate with FIRA.   I was invited to the April practice by Neal, to just check out the cars.  I was welcomed by Jim and Doug and I was allowed to hangout and assist where I could.  Tim put me in his car, without hesitation, to turn a few laps.  I attended events throughout May and June, including entering the pits.  My first race was June 26 and I managed to finish the season.  The competitiveness of these racers doesn’t get in the way of their desire to help others with advice and assisting with repairs on and off the track.  Thanks to John and Neal, I seem to bend your ears the most.  I look forward to next season and spending time with a great group of friends.

I'm not looking to take away business from Jim, I would like to help out while he's recuperating.  It is important to keep the car counts up.
I race the #3 car in the IRS midget series and before that I built and drove drag cars for 20+ years.

SUBJECT:
Transponders

I know the rules are set for this year but I think FIRA should consider this for the future. More and more tracks are adding scoring loops and require transponders for their regular weekly divisions. The only tracks that we race at that I know of that use transponders is the Dells and maybe Madison but I am sure others will follow. The use of transponders will pretty much eliminate the need for a race director but it will add cost (around $200). Also on the positive side is you can see you lap times every lap on line and there is no confusion for finishes. Does anyone have opinions on this?

Tim Roach #17 FIRA

Reply: Actually the race directors duties do not include scoring. A scorer or someone is still required to get and transfer the data and to make sure that the received data is accurate. It is a great help in scoring a race and settling arguments, but someone must line up the races, work as liaison to the track, enlist scorers and settle arguments. The race director is also required to watch for rule infractions on the track. The other problem is that most of the tracks we run do not have scoring loops and some may not be compatible with the transponders we purchase so a receiver of some type would be necessary at a much higher price and someone must set it up, then sit in the grandstands near the start/finish line to watch the equipment etc. Just my opinion.

New car availability?

Howdy,

This might help to quell some rumors about Predators are no longer available.  They are.  We (Keith Howard and I) can provide chassis, parts and components from our existing suppliers and if not from them, with time others.  We would like the readers to know that the development of the Predator was a non-profit venture for most all who have participated in it.  I have made $18 on the sale of Predators since we built the prototype from square tubing and debut it at the Mecca Center way back in 96.  Keith Howard owns the molds and has body parts available for both Predator oval cars (Indy or F1) as well as the Predator DSR car and I know that despite sales of many many bodies, we have not recaptured enough to pay for the development of the molds.  I haven' t heard to the contrary, so I am guessing that Jim Bass, a fabulous machinist and FIRA racer, member and supporter, will supply most of the rolling components and I suspect his profit is also nil.  The frame was available from another FIRA friend, Leon Steenbergen of Vari-tech in Wisconsin and trust me, he didn't buy a vacation home with all the money he made either!.  If any of these Predator suppliers cannot make a part, contact myself or Keith and we will assist in obtaining what you need...be it a hub, rotor or entire chassis.  Again, Predator cars is a platform which were intended to help you build a technically correct and stylish FIRA car.  Long live the Predator!  There are a total of 18 chassis out there that we know about and a couple clone wannabees.  The design has proven its worth not only in victories, records but in surviving crashes as well.  Of course there are always those who have a better mouse trap, or are critical of something on any race car, but the Predator, if built as we intended it to be built, will handle with the best of them, is easy to maintain and part are available locally to Predator owners.  If there is a downside to my design, its that I cannot fit in it!  Most of the recent interest in the Predator car has not come from the Formula Indy Market for which the car was designed, but rather those interested in Slalom or cone racing/autocross.  It its original form, it does not meet SCCA specs but can be autocrossed in a number of associations and road raced in Midwestern Council if you are a member.  We have sent info all over the country, Canada and Mexico.  One chassis was sold and they have stolen the design ideas and are making their own which we are currently dealing with.  email me if you have any questions.

We, just as I am sure you, want to keep this great thing we have going and we can only do that with a spirit of mutual cooperation that can do nothing less than benefit all of us. Use any link to the webmaster.
Again Thanks,

Wally Reitz  FIRA Webmaster

Hay Boys and Girls:  Just a quick note the web site looks great.  Its great to see mister Mike Nelson Firing (FIRAing) up the web site.  Looking forward to the 2007 season, the number 33 car has a new look and new power plant.  Hopefully we can keep it cool enough to run with the rest of the teams.

It is too quiet on the forum!!!!!!!!!
I want to remind everyone that there are only 28 weekend days left before the first practice days.
If you take a couple of days off for Xmas and a couple of days to recover from New Years, that leaves 24 days on the weekend to get our cars ready. If anyone needs help, there are plenty who can assist. Post your technical questions. Just make sure everyone is ready for the first race. The 17 team has been busy with the new GSXR 750 and the fuel and drive system changes.
We should also take this time to update our driver profiles.
I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe holiday season. I hope I get the Hoosier racing tires I asked Santa to bring me. Tim FIRA 17

I would like to take this time to thank all who attended the FIRA annual meeting on December 2nd 2006.  What a great turnout and the impute from all was very encouraging going into the 2007 season.  I want to also thank President John Z, and his board for their dedicated effort during 2006.   And also Wally keep up the good work with the FIRA Web page outstanding very professional.  Newly elected officers have got there work cut out for them.  The challenge they have in front of them is Hugh but it is apparent that they are will to achieve excellence.  We must not be discouraged by the loss of track but set our standards high and we will be welcome at the many tracks in the Tri-state area. We are a professional organization.

The announcement was just made that there will a racing trade show in Indianapolis, the week after our January 20th meeting.  The show will be held in the champions pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.  Aaron and I are planning on attending it to further facilitate the acquisition of parts for our team, funding, and sponsorship of FIRA and the FIRA race dates.  If anyone is interested in attending with us, we will have space available in our vehicle or we can convoy down there if anyone is interested.  I have a web adress for you that details the event and gives contact info for questions. Here is the web adress: http://www.racestud.com/ubb/Forum17/HTML/026945.html. Also, please post a way to contact me about anything that we discussed at the first meeting for 2007 which includes but is not limited to sponsorship, tracks that I have contacts with, and anything technical with the cars.
Here is my information, please post it prominently:
